The Roan Mountain Highlands section traverses the most expansive grassy bald complex in the eastern United States, straddling the Tennessee-North Carolina border along the AT between Carvers Gap and the summit of Roan High Bluff at 6285 feet. The route passes through Roan High Knob Shelter, the highest shelter on the entire Appalachian Trail at 6285 feet, and across the open balds of Round Bald, Engine Gap, Jane Bald, and Grassy Ridge Bald.

The peak attraction is the Catawba rhododendron bloom in mid-June, when the hillsides erupt in vivid pink and purple flowers across hundreds of acres, drawing visitors from across the Southeast. The bloom typically peaks between June 10 and June 25, though timing varies with elevation and annual conditions. The balds offer sweeping views in all directions, with no tree obstruction for miles.

The trailhead at Carvers Gap on TN/NC 143 offers restrooms and ample parking, though the lot overflows on June weekends when the rhododendrons peak. The AT is well-blazed with white paint. The route is exposed and subject to rapid weather changes; afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer. The section connects Tennessee and North Carolina at multiple points and is entirely above 5000 feet for much of its length.
