Lucky Dog Gulch Trail

Lucky Dog Gulch Trail ventures into a rugged desert canyon within Boysen State Park, exploring a landscape of eroded badland formations and fossil-bearing sedimentary deposits that record Wyoming's ancient past. The gulch cuts through layers of Cretaceous and Paleocene sediments that have yielded significant paleontological finds over the years, and careful observers may spot fossilized shell fragments and other ancient marine remains embedded in the exposed rock faces.

The trail climbs steadily through the narrowing canyon, with walls of cream-colored sandstone and shale rising on either side as the gulch deepens. The geological layering is dramatically exposed in the canyon walls, with distinct color bands marking different depositional periods. Desert plants including prickly pear cactus, rabbitbrush, and greasewood cling to the canyon slopes, creating a surprisingly rich mosaic of high-desert vegetation in an apparently austere landscape.

Prairie rattlesnakes inhabit the rocky terrain and should be respected with appropriate caution, particularly in the warmer months when they are most active. Golden eagles nest in the upper canyon and can be observed hunting the surrounding terrain with breathtaking aerial skill. The trail's upper reaches provide excellent views across the Wind River Basin to the distant mountains on the horizon. Lucky Dog Gulch represents the wild, unpolished side of Boysen State Park that rewards explorers willing to venture beyond the reservoir shoreline.
