Fort Adams Access Trail

The Fort Adams Access Trail loops around the grounds of Fort Adams, the largest coastal fortification in the United States and a National Historic Landmark that dominates the southern entrance to Newport Harbor. Construction of the current fort began in 1799 and continued through multiple expansions into the Civil War era, resulting in the massive stone and earthwork defensive complex visible today. The trail circles the fort's outer perimeter along grassy embankments and waterfront paths that offer superb views of Newport Harbor, the Newport Bridge, and the sailing vessels that make Newport one of America's premier yachting centers. The America's Cup yacht races were held in Newport waters from 1930 to 1983, and the harbor continues to host major sailing events throughout the summer season. The trail passes interpretive panels explaining the fort's architectural evolution and military history, including its role in the War of 1812 and its garrisoning through World War II. The waterfront path provides intimate views of the harbor entrance where commercial vessels, Coast Guard cutters, and recreational sailboats pass within close range. Fort Adams State Park adjacent to the trail hosts the Newport Folk Festival and Newport Jazz Festival on its grounds each summer, two of America's most storied music events. The short, flat trail is appropriate for all ages and abilities.
