Ogle Lake Nature Preserve

The Ogle Lake Nature Preserve loop at Brown County State Park offers a quintessential Indiana fall foliage experience in what is widely called the fall foliage capital of Indiana. Brown County's hills are blanketed in an exceptional variety of deciduous trees — sugar maple, scarlet oak, sassafras, and sweetgum — that produce a tapestry of red, orange, gold, and burgundy from mid-October through early November. The trail circuits Ogle Lake, a peaceful 24-acre impoundment that reflects the surrounding autumn color in its calm surface, doubling the visual impact on still mornings. The route stays mostly near lake level, with gentle rises along the wooded shoreline and a few short climbs to lake overlooks. Great blue herons and belted kingfishers work the shallows year-round, while wood ducks use the lake as a staging area during fall migration. Spring wildflowers along the trail include trout lily, spring beauty, and large colonies of wild geranium. The nature preserve designation protects the surrounding forest from timber harvesting, allowing a more mature woodland character than much of the surrounding park. Weekend fall foliage season is extremely crowded; plan weekday visits or arrive before 8 a.m. on Saturdays.
