Dune Summit Trail – Bruneau Dunes Sp
The Dune Summit Trail ascends the tallest single-structured sand dune in North America, rising 470 feet above the surrounding Owyhee high desert. This out-and-back route begins at the park visitor center and immediately plunges into a landscape shaped entirely by wind and time. The climb is deceptively demanding; every step forward on loose sand slides back slightly, building leg strength and resolve in equal measure.
From the broad summit, hikers are rewarded with sweeping panoramas of the Snake River Plain, distant mountain ranges, and the shimmering park lakes nestled at the dune base. On clear days the view stretches to the Owyhee Mountains to the southwest. The descent offers a thrilling optional run-down the steep face. Morning and evening light transforms the dune into a sculpture of golden tones and deep shadow, making this a favorite of photographers. Wildlife including burrowing owls, kangaroo rats, and western toads inhabits the surrounding desert scrub.
