Burgess Falls Trail

Burgess Falls Trail follows the Falling Water River downstream through Burgess Falls State Park, passing four successive waterfalls before reaching the dramatic 136-foot main falls at the trail terminus. The sequential waterfall experience is unique among Tennessee state parks, with each successive falls larger and more powerful than the last. The first three falls are accessible viewpoints along the river corridor, while the main falls require descending a steep staircase to a viewing platform directly below the plunge. The main falls drop over a sheer limestone-and-chert cliff into a deep emerald pool, the roar audible from well up the trail. The Falling Water River is impounded upstream by Center Hill Lake, and water releases from the dam influence flow volumes at the falls. The trail traverses a mixed cedar-oak-hickory forest typical of the Highland Rim geology, with exposed limestone outcroppings and cedar glades adding botanical interest. The park is free with no entrance fees, making it accessible for budget-conscious visitors. The state park encompasses only 355 acres, making it one of Tennessee's smaller parks, but the trail delivers an outsized experience relative to its compact footprint. Dogs are permitted on leash. This is one of Middle Tennessee's most beloved natural attractions.
