Lake Trail

The Lake Trail at Buttermilk Falls State Park circles the peaceful shores of Treman Lake, a small impoundment nestled within a valley of old-growth hemlock and mixed hardwood forest that provides a quiet contrast to the dramatic gorge experience at the park entrance. The loop wanders through one of the finest remaining stands of eastern hemlock in the Finger Lakes region, where ancient trees create a cathedral-like canopy that filters summer light into a cool green glow and carpets the forest floor with centuries of accumulated needles. Treman Lake reflects the surrounding forest in its calm surface and supports populations of painted turtles, great blue herons, and various waterfowl that can be observed from the shoreline. The gentle terrain and modest elevation gain make this an excellent choice for families with young children and visitors seeking a more meditative woodland experience after the energetic gorge hike. Seasonal wildflowers including Canada mayflower, jack-in-the-pulpit, and yellow trout lily bloom in profusion along the trail margins in May and June. The hemlock groves are under threat from the woolly adelgid, an invasive insect, and park staff work actively to protect these irreplaceable trees. Fall foliage in October brings spectacular color to the deciduous canopy surrounding the hemlocks, creating vivid seasonal contrasts across the lake surface.
