Big Pines Trail

The Big Pines Trail at Caddo Lake State Park moves away from the cypress swamp margin into the upland pine forest that covers the higher ground of the park, revealing a distinctly different face of the East Texas landscape. Old-growth loblolly pine and longleaf pine specimens along the trail represent some of the largest and oldest trees in the Texas state park system, their massive trunks and towering crowns creating a forest atmosphere that speaks to the primeval character of the Pineywoods region.

Wild azalea blooms in late winter and early spring transform sections of the trail into tunnels of fragrant pink and white flowers, making March the most popular month for this particular loop. The azalea display at Caddo Lake is one of the most celebrated wildflower events in East Texas, drawing visitors specifically for this ephemeral spectacle. Beyond the azaleas, the upland forest supports a rich community of resident and migratory birds including red-cockaded woodpeckers, which nest in older pine trees and represent one of the region most significant conservation success stories. Bachman sparrows sing their complex songs from the wire grass understory. White-tailed deer and wild turkeys are common throughout. The combination of towering pines, spring wildflowers, and significant wildlife diversity makes the Big Pines Trail a vital complement to the swamp-focused experiences elsewhere in the park.
