Bald Rock Mountain

Bald Rock Mountain at 1,100 feet is one of the best-kept secrets in Camden Hills State Park, offering outstanding ocean views with a fraction of the crowds that converge on Mount Battie. The trail begins at a trailhead on Ski Lodge Road in Lincolnville and traverses the northern section of the Camden Hills ridge through mature northern hardwood forest before climbing to a broad open granite summit ledge. From the top, the view east across Penobscot Bay is expansive, taking in Islesboro Island, North Haven Island, Vinalhaven Island, and on the clearest days the distant blue shapes of Deer Isle and even Isle au Haut. The route follows the ridge connecting multiple Camden Hills summits, providing a genuine ridge-walk experience unusual for coastal Maine. The surrounding forest supports a rich variety of neotropical migratory songbirds during May and early June, with breeding warblers including black-throated blue, black-throated green, Blackburnian, and ovenbird all present along the forested sections. The summit ledge is an excellent hawk-watching platform during the September–October raptor migration season when broad-winged hawks, sharp-shinned hawks, and merlins move south along the coast.
