Breadloaves Area – City Of Rocks Nr
The Breadloaves Area loop traverses the reserve finest concentration of climbing formations while following portions of the original California Trail emigrant route that brought thousands of westward-bound travelers through this spectacular granite landscape in the mid-1800s. The Breadloaves themselves are a cluster of rounded granite domes that resemble their culinary namesake when viewed from the approach, their smooth surfaces and moderate relief making them among the most accessible technical climbing venues in the reserve.
The loop gains substantial elevation through a combination of maintained trail and cross-country travel among boulder fields, reaching high vantage points with panoramic views of the entire reserve and the surrounding Albion Mountains. The pinyon-juniper woodland throughout the area provides habitat for pinyon jays, mountain bluebirds, and Clark nutcrackers that depend on pinyon pine seed crops. Marmots inhabit the rocky high zones and their warning calls echo between granite faces on sunny afternoons. The emigrant trail segments incorporated into this loop are identifiable by wagon ruts and interpretive markers, connecting the recreational hiking experience to the profound historical significance of this place as a waypoint on one of the great human migration routes of the nineteenth century American West.
