Window Arch Trail

The Window Arch Trail ascends to one of the most photographed features in City of Rocks National Reserve, a natural window arch carved through a massive granite monolith by thousands of years of differential weathering along fracture lines in the ancient rock. The arch frames a perfectly composed view of the surrounding stone city, creating an irresistible subject for photographers at any time of day but especially at sunset when the framed landscape glows with warm light.

The route climbs steadily through an increasingly dramatic boulder landscape, scrambling up and around granite formations that dwarf the human scale at every turn. The 2.5-billion-year-old Twin Sisters granite formation that constitutes much of the reserve is among the oldest exposed rock in Idaho, uplifted from ancient continental crust and slowly eroded by wind, water, ice, and thermal cycling into the extraordinary shapes visible today. Prairie falcons and golden eagles nest in the higher cliff faces accessible only to birds and technical climbers. The arch itself is a memorable destination accessible without technical climbing skills, though some simple hand-and-foot scrambling is required near the top. The return route retraces the ascent, with the descent revealing views that were behind the hiker on the way up, effectively offering a different visual experience on the same trail.
