City of Rocks Trail

The City of Rocks Trail winds through one of New Mexico's most otherworldly geological landscapes, a dense cluster of volcanic tuff pinnacles and boulders that rise dramatically from the Chihuahuan Desert floor in southwestern New Mexico. These remarkable formations were created approximately 34 million years ago when a massive volcanic eruption deposited ash and debris that subsequently solidified into tuff rock. Millions of years of erosion have sculpted the tuff into the fantastic towers, corridors, and chambers that give this park its evocative name. The trail navigates through a labyrinth of rock formations that creates an almost urban feel, with narrow passages between tall stone walls opening into broader plazas and chambers. The rock surfaces display fascinating patterns of erosion including honeycomb weathering, wind-carved pockets, and smooth curved surfaces polished by centuries of wind and water. Chihuahuan Desert vegetation including yucca, ocotillo, creosote, and various cacti grow in the sandy spaces between formations. Wildlife including cactus wrens, rock wrens, and various lizard species inhabit the rocky terrain. The formation's unique character made it a favored campsite for travelers along historic routes through the region. Stargazing within the rock labyrinth is exceptional due to the park's dark skies and the natural amphitheater created by the surrounding formations, making City of Rocks one of New Mexico's premier astronomy destinations.
