Trail of Giants

The Trail of Giants at City of Rocks State Park circuits through the outer perimeter of the volcanic formation field, visiting the largest and most dramatic rock pillars that give this extraordinary landscape its name. This moderate loop extends beyond the central rock labyrinth into the broader desert terrain, offering changing perspectives on the formation cluster from the surrounding Chihuahuan Desert flatlands before re-entering the rocks through dramatic portals and passages. The largest formations visited on this route rise twenty to thirty feet above the desert floor, their weathered surfaces displaying the full complexity of tuff erosion patterns including differential weathering zones, wind-carved hollows, and dramatic overhangs. From the outer portions of the loop, the cluster of formations appears as a rocky island rising from the desert plain, surrounded by Mimbres Valley grasslands and framed by distant mountain ranges including the Black Range and Cooke's Range. Desert grassland species including tobosa grass, black grama, and desert marigold cover the flatter terrain between the rocky outcrops. Pronghorn antelope occasionally appear on the surrounding grasslands, and prairie dog colonies occupy the more open areas near the park boundary. The Trail of Giants provides the most comprehensive experience of the park's full geological extent, revealing how the formation field was originally a continuous sheet of welded tuff that erosion has progressively sculpted into the isolated pillars and clusters visitors see today at this remarkable New Mexico state park.
