Gorman Falls Trail – Colorado Bend Sp
Gorman Falls is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful natural features in the Texas Hill Country, a 70-foot curtain of water draped over a moss-covered travertine cliff at the end of a short but rewarding trail in Colorado Bend State Park. The falls are fed by Gorman Creek, whose spring-enriched waters deposit calcium carbonate as they flow over the cliff face, slowly building the extraordinary layered formations of living travertine that give the waterfall its distinctive green and white appearance. The trail from the parking area descends gradually through cedar and live oak woodland, following the Colorado River corridor before turning up the Gorman Creek drainage to the base of the falls. The final approach through a dense grove of giant maidenhair ferns and moss-draped limestone is one of the most verdant and atmospheric experiences available anywhere in central Texas, an unexpected Eden tucked into dry ranch country. The falls flow year-round thanks to their spring-fed source, though volume varies considerably between wet and dry seasons. Dogs are not permitted on this trail to protect the sensitive riparian ecosystem around the falls. Tours are sometimes conducted by park rangers providing geological and ecological interpretation of the travertine formation process. The park also offers cave tours and river access for kayaking on the Colorado River. Gorman Falls deserves its reputation as a bucket-list destination for Texas nature lovers, delivering visual drama entirely unexpected from the surrounding limestone ranch country.
