West Beach to North Beach

The West Beach to North Beach route is a satisfying loop hike in Deception Pass State Park that combines two distinct coastal environments: an open Pacific-facing driftwood beach and a sheltered, forested bluff trail overlooking the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The hike begins at West Beach, where massive driftwood logs pile along the shoreline and expansive views stretch westward toward the Olympic Peninsula. The sandy beach section provides easy walking with opportunities to explore the wrack line for shells, agates, and ocean-worn glass. The trail then ascends into dense stands of Douglas fir and shore pine, traversing forested bluffs above the water before descending to North Beach. This sheltered cove offers calmer conditions and a different perspective on the park's coastline. The return leg follows inland forest trails that pass through cool, moss-draped woodland with excellent birding opportunities. Great blue herons are commonly spotted hunting along both shorelines. The varied terrain and contrasting coastal landscapes make this loop one of the most rewarding moderate hikes in the park. Sunset walks along West Beach are particularly memorable, with the fading light illuminating the driftwood and silhouetting the Olympic Mountains to the west. Carry water and wear layers, as coastal weather changes rapidly.
