Mill Creek Trail

The Mill Creek Trail follows the namesake creek through a forested ravine that shelters some of the most evocative iron-era ruins in the French Creek corridor. Stone walls, foundation remnants, and millrace channels from the 18th and 19th century iron-making era emerge from the undergrowth at intervals along the path, offering tangible connections to the region's industrial past when Hopewell and neighboring furnaces transformed local forests into charcoal and ore into metal. Mill Creek itself is a clean, cold limestone-influenced stream supporting native brook trout and a diverse crayfish community. The trail crosses and recrosses the creek on log bridges, following the water upstream through a narrow valley before climbing gently onto a ridge and looping back through open mixed forest. Spring is particularly rewarding: skunk cabbage pushes through saturated ground in February, followed by a succession of wildflowers from hepatica and trout lily through wild geranium and phlox extending into May. Breeding Louisiana waterthrushes patrol the stream margins, their loud cascading song audible above the sound of the water. The loop is well-suited to families with children, who enjoy the creek crossings and ruins exploration. The trail connects directly to the Six Penny and Lenape trails, enabling longer outings deeper into the park's interior forest.
