Frozen Head Tower Trail

Frozen Head Tower Trail ascends to the 3,324-foot summit of Frozen Head Mountain, the highest point on the Cumberland Plateau and site of a historic fire lookout tower with 360-degree views of the surrounding mountains and plateau. The trail is a legitimate physical challenge, gaining nearly 2,800 feet over 5.25 miles and earning a reputation as one of Tennessee's finest backcountry day hikes. Frozen Head State Park receives more annual rainfall than almost any other location in Tennessee, creating a lush, verdant forest that rivals the Great Smoky Mountains in wildflower diversity and old-growth character. The route passes through several distinct forest zones as elevation increases, transitioning from mixed hardwood at the base to northern hardwood communities with yellow birch and American beech near the summit. The Barkley Marathon ultra-running event, one of the world's most difficult races, uses the trails of Frozen Head as part of its legendary course. The summit tower, though no longer actively staffed, provides an elevated platform above the tree canopy. Views extend to the Great Smokies on clear days. No fee is charged.
