Old Baldy Trail

Old Baldy Trail climbs steeply to the rocky limestone summit of Old Baldy Hill, the defining landmark of Garner State Park and a classic Texas Hill Country hike that has been rewarding visitors with panoramic views of the Frio River Valley for generations. The ascent is short but relentlessly steep, scrambling up eroded limestone steps and exposed rock faces through juniper and live oak woodland before emerging onto the bare summit plateau. From the top, the rewards are immediate and dramatic: the Frio River winds through its cypress-lined valley far below, the park's campgrounds and recreation areas visible among the trees, while rolling limestone hills covered in juniper and oak extend to every horizon. The Frio River itself, with its distinctive blue-green water flowing over pale limestone, is one of Texas's most beloved swimming and tubing destinations, and seeing it from above adds perspective to the valley landscape. Wild turkeys are frequently heard gobbling from the oak woodland below the summit, and white-tailed deer graze openly on the rocky slopes in early morning and evening hours. The trail is heavily used on summer weekends when Garner State Park is at its most crowded, so early morning visits yield both solitude and the best lighting conditions for the valley views. Despite its brevity, this remains one of the most beloved short hikes in the Texas Hill Country.
