Pecan Grove Trail

The Pecan Grove Trail wanders through the lush bottomland forest along the Frio River, passing beneath a canopy of enormous native pecan trees whose massive spreading crowns create a park-like setting of extraordinary charm and natural grandeur. The Frio River bottomland supports one of the finest native pecan groves in the Texas Hill Country, with specimens reaching heights of 60 feet or more and trunk diameters suggesting centuries of growth in this fertile, well-watered river corridor. The clear, spring-fed Frio River is visible and accessible at multiple points along the trail, its distinctive blue-green water flowing over a pale limestone bed and providing some of the finest swimming conditions in all of Texas during the warm months. The bottomland forest supports exceptional bird diversity, with painted buntings, summer tanagers, yellow-billed cuckoos, and great blue herons among the most spectacular species encountered along the trail margins and river corridor. White-tailed deer are numerous and often surprisingly tame in this heavily visited park. In fall, the pecan trees drop their nuts across the trail surface, attracting wild turkeys, fox squirrels, and white-tailed deer in abundance. The flat, gentle terrain makes this loop ideal for families with young children or visitors seeking a relaxed riverside walk after a morning of more strenuous activity.
