Canyon Trail

The Canyon Trail at Guernsey State Park explores a dramatic sandstone canyon carved by the North Platte River over millions of years. This moderate loop climbs through layered red and buff sandstone formations that glow brilliantly at sunrise and sunset, offering photographers exceptional lighting conditions throughout the day.

The trail follows the canyon rim in sections, providing sweeping views down to the North Platte River and across the high plains of eastern Wyoming. Interpretive panels along the route explain how the Oregon Trail pioneers who passed through this area more than 175 years ago relied on the North Platte as their guide west, and how the subsequent damming of the river created Guernsey Reservoir.

The sandstone walls of the canyon harbor cliff swallows, prairie falcons, and occasional golden eagles that nest in the rocky ledges. Mule deer are frequently spotted grazing on the canyon slopes at dawn and dusk. The trail surface can be loose and sandy in places, so sturdy footwear is recommended. The combination of geological drama, wildlife, and historical context makes the Canyon Trail one of the most satisfying day hikes in Wyoming's eastern plains parks.
