Iao Needle Overlook Trail – Iao Valley Sp
The Iao Needle Overlook Trail leads to the most famous natural landmark on Maui, the Iao Needle, a 2,250-foot volcanic spire rising dramatically from the floor of Iao Valley amid lush tropical vegetation. The Needle, known in Hawaiian as Kukaemoku, holds deep sacred significance as a site associated with the god Kanaloa and as the location of the 1790 Battle of Kepaniwai, where Kamehameha I unified the Hawaiian Islands in a decisive military victory. The paved trail is short and accessible, winding through verdant grounds maintained by the state to showcase both the natural and cultural heritage of this remarkable valley. The valley receives an enormous amount of rainfall from the central Maui mountains above, creating one of the most botanically rich and visually dramatic settings on the island. Interpretive panels along the route describe the geological formation of the valley and its central role in Hawaiian history and spirituality. The viewing platform provides the classic framed view of the Needle that has made this one of the most photographed sites in all of Hawaii.
