Kepaniwai Park Trail

The Kepaniwai Park Trail winds through a unique heritage park within Iao Valley that celebrates the diverse ethnic groups who have shaped Hawaii multicultural identity. The park features traditional structures, gardens, and pavilions representing Native Hawaiian, Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, Portuguese, Korean, and New England missionary heritage, each maintained by descendant communities as a living tribute to their ancestors. The name Kepaniwai means damming of the waters in Hawaiian, referring to the 1790 battle in this valley where so many soldiers fell that their bodies dammed the stream. Walking through the garden complex along the stream bank, visitors gain a tangible sense of the layered history of the Hawaiian Islands from ancient Polynesian settlement through the plantation era that shaped modern Hawaii.
