Alum Creek drains into Kanopolis Reservoir through a broad valley that attracts concentrations of migrating shorebirds in spring and fall when water levels expose mudflats. The trail follows the creek arm through prairie and cedar woodland to excellent birdwatching areas. White pelicans stop during migration, and bald eagles concentrate here in winter when the reservoir remains partially open. The Smoky Hills Wild Horse and Burro Corrals adjacent to the park house federally protected wild horses.
