Marlette Lake Trail

The Marlette Lake Trail is a demanding and spectacular hike at Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park, climbing through the Carson Range to reach Marlette Lake, the highest lake in the Tahoe Basin at approximately 7,900 feet in elevation. The 10-mile round trip ascent gains 1,600 feet through dense forests of pine and fir, offering progressively expanding views of Lake Tahoe and the surrounding mountain landscape as hikers climb higher into the Sierra Nevada.

Marlette Lake itself is a serene alpine reservoir set in a glacially carved basin surrounded by rocky peaks and conifer forest. The lake's clear blue waters and remote mountain setting create a profoundly peaceful destination that rewards the effort required to reach it. From the lake, hikers can enjoy sweeping views of the Carson Range and the peaks rising above the eastern shore of Lake Tahoe.

The trail is well-maintained and follows historic paths used during the 19th century to supply water to the Comstock Lode silver mines of Virginia City. The route passes through diverse mountain ecosystems and offers excellent wildlife viewing opportunities, including mule deer, black bears, and numerous bird species. The $12 per vehicle park entry fee applies. Leashed dogs are welcome on this trail. Hikers should start early to avoid afternoon thunderstorms common in summer, carry adequate water, and dress in layers for rapidly changing mountain weather conditions at elevation.
