Fragrance Lake Trail

Fragrance Lake Trail climbs through lush Pacific Northwest forest to a beautiful, hidden lake nestled in a forested cirque on the slopes of Chuckanut Mountain, with bonus views across Bellingham Bay from intermediate viewpoints along the ascent. The trail begins at Larrabee State Park and climbs steadily through a mixed forest of Douglas fir, western hemlock, and red alder, with a rich understory of sword fern, salal, and oxalis creating the characteristic lush green character of maritime Northwest forests. An optional side trail near the midpoint leads to a dramatic rocky viewpoint above Bellingham Bay where the city, the San Juan Islands, and the Cascade peaks including Mount Baker are visible on clear days. Continuing upward, the forest transitions to a more sheltered character as the trail approaches the lake basin. Fragrance Lake itself is a serene, tea-colored body of water reflecting the surrounding conifers, with a peaceful atmosphere well-removed from the sounds of the highway and bay below. The lake supports a small population of cutthroat trout and the surrounding forest is rich with bird life including Pacific wrens, Swainson's thrushes, and chestnut-backed chickadees. A loop around the lakeshore is possible via informal paths. The combination of bay views, old-growth forest, and a beautiful destination lake makes this trail one of the most satisfying moderate hikes in the Bellingham area. Muddy conditions are common in winter and spring.
