West Trail

The West Trail climbs from the Sabinal River canyon floor to the plateau rim above Lost Maples State Natural Area, offering sweeping views across the limestone karst landscape of the Edwards Plateau and providing a different perspective on the relict maple groves visible below in the canyon. The ascent passes through a transition from canyon bottom moisture-loving vegetation to the drier, more exposed plateau environment dominated by live oak, Ashe juniper, and Texas persimmon. The canyon overlook viewpoints reveal the dramatic incision of the Sabinal River into the plateau surface, a process driven by the ongoing uplift of the Edwards Plateau over millions of years. The limestone terrain of the plateau surface is classic karst topography, with solution hollows, sinkholes, and exposed bedrock pavements that drain rapidly after rain and support drought-adapted plant communities. In fall, the view from the rim looking down into the maple-filled canyon below is breathtaking, with vivid orange and red foliage carpeting the canyon bottom visible from above. Ladder-backed woodpeckers and vermilion flycatchers are among the most colorful bird species inhabiting the drier plateau. The loop format ensures hikers experience both the canyon and plateau environments, maximizing the ecological and scenic diversity of this remarkable state natural area.
