Mushroom Rock State Park protects one of Kansas's most unusual geological features - a collection of enormous Dakota Sandstone concretions that weathered into mushroom shapes as surrounding softer rock eroded away. The largest concretion measures 27 feet across the cap and stands 9 feet tall. These formations developed 100 million years ago in shallow marine sediments when minerals precipitated around organic material. The Mushroom Rock site served as a landmark for Smoky Hills wagon trains crossing Kansas.
