Falls Trail

The Falls Trail leads to the geological centerpiece of Pedernales Falls State Park, where the Pedernales River cascades over a series of broad limestone terraces in a sweeping, staircase-like formation that is unlike any other waterfall in Texas. The falls are not a single dramatic plunge but rather a wide, layered cascade where the river spreads across tilted and fractured limestone beds, creating a mosaic of channels, pools, and rushing chutes that changes dramatically with river flow. During periods of normal flow, the pale limestone terraces are studded with pools reflecting the Texas sky, creating a landscape of extraordinary photographic beauty. After significant rainfall, the falls transform dramatically, with floodwaters roaring across the entire width of the terrace system in a display of raw hydraulic power. The trail descends through cedar and live oak woodland to river viewing areas and accessible portions of the limestone terrace, where wading and photography are popular in calm conditions. Flash flooding risk is real and signs should be heeded during and after storms. White-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and roadrunners are commonly seen along the trail margins. The gentle loop terrain makes this suitable for families with young children while delivering one of the most distinctive natural landscape experiences in the Texas Hill Country.
