Jessie Gerard Trail – Peoples Sf
The Jessie Gerard Trail loops through the upland sections of Peoples State Forest, climbing from the Farmington River valley through an unusual mosaic of managed pine plantation and natural quartzite bedrock outcrops that give this forest a distinctly varied character. The trail is named in honor of a key early supporter of the Connecticut state forests program and passes through forest stands that reflect over a century of conservation management including both active timber harvesting and passive old-growth protection. The pine plantation sections—white, red, and Scots pine planted in dense rows by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s—create atmospheric cathedral-like corridors where the forest floor is carpeted in deep needles and almost entirely free of shrub vegetation. These plantations are gradually being converted to more diverse native forest through selective harvesting, and the trail passes through several areas where young hardwoods are reclaiming former plantation ground. The quartzite outcrops scattered throughout the upland sections represent ancient Precambrian metamorphic rock far older than the region's more familiar glacial geology, erupting through the forest floor as broad, lichen-covered domes with thin soils supporting trailing arbutus and rock tripe lichens. Spring ephemerals including hepatica and bloodroot bloom abundantly along the trail's moister sections in late April, and fall foliage on the upper ridges peaks in mid-October with excellent sugar maple and red oak color.
