Children Trail

The Children Trail at Picacho Peak State Park covers the lower section of the famous Hunter Trail route, offering a rewarding moderate hike that captures much of the geological drama and desert scenery without requiring the exposed cable sections that make the summit push strenuous and potentially frightening. This out-and-back route climbs through classic Sonoran Desert terrain with excellent views of the surrounding desert floor developing as elevation increases. Saguaro cacti, brittlebush, and palo verde trees line the trail in the lower sections, transitioning to more rocky terrain with limited vegetation as the route climbs higher on the volcanic flanks. Spring wildflower displays along the lower trail are particularly spectacular, as the slopes around Picacho Peak are one of the most reliable locations in Arizona for the Mexican gold poppy blooms that attract visitors from across the Southwest. The trail provides excellent educational opportunities for families to discuss desert ecology, volcanic geology, and Arizona history, including the Civil War battle that took place on these very slopes in 1862. The turnaround point on this family-friendly route occurs before the most technically demanding cable sections, making it appropriate for children and less experienced hikers who still want a meaningful encounter with this landmark Arizona peak. The views from the upper portion of the Children Trail are genuinely impressive, offering a satisfying reward for the moderate climbing effort.
