Sunset Vista Trail

The Sunset Vista Trail at Picacho Peak State Park offers an alternate ridge approach to the summit of this iconic volcanic plug, providing a different perspective on the mountain's dramatic geology and the surrounding Sonoran Desert landscape. The trail begins on the west side of the peak and climbs steadily along an exposed ridge that lives up to its name, offering particularly stunning views during the golden hour before sunset when the desert floor glows in warm light and the volcanic rock of Picacho Peak takes on deep red and orange hues. The route traverses the same rugged volcanic terrain as the Hunter Trail but approaches from a different angle, passing through rock formations and gullies that reveal additional facets of the peak's complex structure. Cable-assisted sections appear on this route as well, requiring the same careful attention to handholds and footing that the Hunter Trail demands. The ridge provides continuous panoramic views throughout the climb, with sightlines extending across the broad agricultural valley and desert plains that surround the peak. Wildlife on the exposed ridges includes raptors, including American kestrels and prairie falcons that nest in the volcanic cliffs. Spring wildflower season transforms the lower slopes with colorful blooms. The Sunset Vista Trail can be combined with the Hunter Trail for a complete loop experience around the peak, providing the most comprehensive exploration of this remarkable Civil War historic site and natural landmark in southern Arizona.
