Sunset Rocks Trail

Sunset Rocks Trail climbs the South Mountain ridgeline south of Pine Grove Furnace State Park to a series of open quartzite ledges with outstanding westward views over the Cumberland Valley farmland below. As the name suggests, the outlook is oriented perfectly for late afternoon and evening visits, when the setting sun illuminates the agricultural patchwork of Cumberland County in warm golden light. The trail follows a combination of park service roads, the Appalachian Trail corridor, and a connecting side trail to reach the ledges, with the majority of elevation gain occurring in the final half mile as the route steepens toward the rocky crest. South Mountain's ridge supports dry oak-heath forest with mountain laurel, blueberries, and trailing arbutus in the understory; the laurel bloom in mid-June is particularly dense near the rocky summit. The ledge area is large enough to accommodate multiple groups and offers both open sunny exposures for picnicking and shaded nooks among the boulders. Timber rattlesnakes inhabit the rocky south-facing slopes and are occasionally encountered sunning on the ledges in spring and fall; observe from a respectful distance and give them right of way on the trail. The route connects to the Appalachian Trail, and motivated hikers can extend the outing northward to Pole Steeple or southward along the ridge for an extended ridge-walk experience.
