Barking Sands Dune Trail

The Barking Sands Dune Trail explores the remarkable sand dunes at Polihale, where a rare acoustic phenomenon produces a squeaking or barking sound when the dry sand grains are disturbed underfoot. This unusual effect, observed at only a handful of beaches worldwide, is caused by the uniform size and smooth surface of the quartz sand grains creating a resonance effect when they slide against each other under pressure. The dunes at Polihale rise to 100 feet above the beach, offering elevated views across the full sweep of the western Kauai shoreline and the distant silhouette of Niihau, the privately owned Forbidden Island visible on clear days. The dune ecosystem supports specialized plant communities adapted to shifting sand and salt spray, including beach morning glory and other native coastal pioneers. Walking barefoot on the dunes after midday when the sand is warm and dry provides the optimal conditions for hearing the famous barking effect. The surrounding landscape of open dunes, turquoise water, and towering Na Pali cliffs at the north end creates a scene of extraordinary natural beauty unique to this corner of the Pacific.
