Rough Canyon Trail

The Rough Canyon Trail ventures into the most remote and rugged terrain within Robbers Cave State Park, traversing the Sansbois Mountains through dense forest and scrambling over sandstone boulders and rocky ridges rarely visited by casual park visitors. This trail earns its name from the challenging nature of the terrain, which includes steep ascents, boulder fields, and narrow canyon passages that require careful footwork and physical fitness to navigate safely. The surrounding Sansbois Mountains are part of the Ouachita range, an ancient folded mountain system that predates the Rockies, composed primarily of sandstone and shale that has been sculpted into rugged canyon terrain by millions of years of erosion. The forest is dense and largely undisturbed, supporting populations of black bear, bobcat, and numerous bird species. The isolation of the route gives experienced hikers a genuine sense of wilderness within the managed state park landscape. Seasonal wildflowers bloom along the trail margins in spring, and fall colors in October and November provide spectacular visual rewards for those willing to tackle the more demanding terrain of this outstanding but less-traveled park trail.
