The Field 5 Nature Trail explores the maritime shrubland and dune habitat in the quieter eastern section of Robert Moses State Park, providing an introduction to the remarkable ecological community that thrives on New York barrier islands. The loop winds through dense thickets of beach plum, bayberry, bearberry, and seaside goldenrod that form the characteristic low shrubland of Atlantic barrier beaches, sculpted by salt spray and wind into aerodynamic mounds and hollows. This habitat is critically important for migratory songbirds that use the barrier island as a resting and refueling stop during their southward fall migration, and during peak migration periods in September and October the shrubs teem with warblers, thrushes, and sparrows. The dune system adjacent to the trail provides nesting habitat for piping plovers and least terns, both species of conservation concern, and portions of the beach may be temporarily closed to protect nesting areas during the breeding season. Interpretive signs along the boardwalk sections explain the ecology of the dune system, the adaptations of barrier island plants to salt and wind exposure, and the importance of this coastal habitat in the broader Atlantic flyway migration corridor. The quiet atmosphere of Field 5 contrasts pleasantly with the busier western fields, making it a favorite destination for naturalists and birdwatchers visiting the park.
