The Fire Wave Trail is one of the most visually stunning short hikes in the American Southwest, leading visitors across a dramatic landscape of swirling red, pink, and white Aztec Sandstone patterns in Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada. The trail begins near the White Domes parking area and winds across open sandstone slickrock, with cairns marking the route across the undulating terrain.

The highlight is the Fire Wave itself, a massive formation of banded sandstone where centuries of wind and water erosion have revealed concentric layers of color, creating a swirling, flame-like effect that is especially vivid at sunrise and sunset. The vibrant hues range from deep crimson and burnt orange to soft pink and brilliant white, making this one of the most photographed geological formations in Nevada.

The hike is relatively short at 1.5 miles round trip with only 200 feet of elevation gain, though the exposed sandstone terrain and lack of shade make it feel more demanding in warm weather. The park charges a $15 per vehicle entry fee. Dogs are not permitted on this trail. Hikers should bring ample water and sun protection, particularly during summer months when temperatures can exceed 110 degrees Fahrenheit.
