Siphon Draw Trail – Lost Dutchman Sp
Siphon Draw Trail is the premier hike at Lost Dutchman State Park, ascending through a dramatic basalt canyon in the Superstition Mountains to the iconic Flatiron summit. The trail begins at the main trailhead and immediately enters a rugged wash flanked by towering volcanic cliffs. As hikers gain elevation, the canyon narrows and the terrain becomes increasingly rocky, requiring careful foot placement and occasional use of hands on steeper sections. The upper reaches offer breathtaking views across the Valley of the Sun and the surrounding Superstition Wilderness. Reaching the Flatiron, a distinctive flat-topped basalt formation perched high above the desert floor, rewards hikers with a panoramic 360-degree vantage point. The descent returns via the same route, so trekking poles are recommended for the steep downhill sections. Wildlife including Gambel's quail, coyotes, and desert mule deer are commonly seen along the way. Spring wildflowers carpet the lower slopes following winter rains. Start early to avoid the midday heat, carry ample water, and wear sun protection. The trail's combination of geological drama, sweeping desert scenery, and physical challenge makes it one of the most memorable hikes in the greater Phoenix area.
