Sky Top Carriageway

The Sky Top Carriageway circles Lake Minnewaska, a perched sky lake resting atop the Shawangunk Ridge at 1,650 feet elevation, its waters a striking azure blue produced by the highly acidic, mineral-poor environment of the white quartzite conglomerate bedrock beneath. This 4-mile loop follows historic carriage roads constructed in the late 1800s when the Minnewaska Mountain House resort drew wealthy New Yorkers seeking fresh air above the Hudson Valley heat. The broad, crushed-gravel carriageway is accessible to strollers and leashed dogs, making it the most family-friendly route in the park. Lake Minnewaska is one of very few swimming lakes in the New York State Park system; a designated beach area opens in summer with lifeguard supervision. The route crests the ridge with panoramic views south toward the Delaware River watershed and west across the Great Appalachian Valley toward the Catskill Mountains. Spring brings rare pitch pine and lowbush blueberry blooms along the ridge; August produces a harvest of wild blueberries accessible from the carriageway edge. The preserve protects 22,000 acres of the Shawangunk Ridge, one of the most biodiverse areas in the northeastern United States with over 40 globally rare plant and animal species.
