Wildcat Falls Trail

The Wildcat Falls Trail descends from Rhododendron State Park into a narrow hemlock-lined gorge along Wildcat Brook, visiting a series of small but elegant waterfalls and cascades carved into the metamorphic bedrock of the Monadnock region's ancient Precambrian basement rocks. The gorge microclimate — perpetually cool, humid, and sheltered from wind — supports an exceptionally lush understory of ferns, mosses, and liverworts that carpet every available rock surface and fallen log. Eastern hemlock dominates the canopy overhead, its dark, dense shade and acidic needle litter creating conditions characteristic of hemlock gorge ecosystems throughout the Appalachians. Brook trout persist in the cold, clean flows of Wildcat Brook, their presence an indicator of excellent water quality maintained by the surrounding protected forest. The waterfalls themselves, while modest in scale compared to the White Mountains, display beautiful rock sculpting — potholes, fluted channels, and polished surfaces that reveal the complex structure of the underlying schist and gneiss. The gorge section of the trail requires some careful footing on slick rocks near the water, but presents no technical difficulty. This short trail is an excellent option for families with children seeking a nature-focused excursion or for visitors combining it with the Rhododendron Loop and Little Monadnock Mountain for a full day in the park.
